​Our "keeper" from the Lepidoptera Litter is Portia.  She is a pistol!

Pistol has been the understatement of the year, in this case! Portia the true inheritor of her multi-great grandmother Julia's mantle of "wild child" & while I hoped that by the time she entered her veteran years she would have slowed down enough to comport herself with some decorum in the ring - she is still Wild At Heart at the age of ten!

​ We guided her wildness into a field career, and she was very keen and quite fast in her prime. She was a creative lure courser, to say the least, as the course in her head was often more exciting (and with way more turns) than the real one in front of her. Portia will probably not ever get a point on the field, but we live in hope for a MC for her some day.. In racing, she has her TRP & PR, but is a terrible "side runner", so a career of often drawing boxes 4 through 6  kept her as a C/D competitor. Now that she is a senior veteran with several wonky toes, she is rarely allowed to run a full race meet & she mostly serves as padding to get to thirty dogs these days, being pulled after Program One. Portia has taken over her mother's mantle as an A + trainer for young racers, as she never retaliates if bumped and always maintains her laser focus on the task at hand - getting the bunny!

.Portia's human friends have nicknamed her "Crazy Eyes", and that ought to tell you a lot about her! Win or lose, she is the best-tempered whippet we've ever had,  She has won friends wherever she went & has turned many into diehard whippet lovers.

The end of 2019 brought about a big change for Portia when she gave birth to nine puppies [6 boys & 3 girls] on 12/6.  She was a great mother! Portia is at her happiest at any running event. She may not be among the fastest, but she is steady and focused & is a wonderful trainer for our up and coming racers & coursers. Portia stepped into the show ring once again, this time as a ten-year-old veteran, enjoying strutting around as the singular Veteran Sweeps entry at the summer and fall 2025 NCWFA specialties. I loved the rosettes and fun win photos, Portia loved the bait in the ring, applause, and toy prizes.
