Our latest litter, the "Literary Birds", arrived on July 18, 2024 [DC Summit Good Vibrations MC x CH Milescross Odalisque]! Five mostly brindle males & three mostly brindle females, all puppies have been placed in their forever homes.
If you are in Northern California, do check the NCWFA Breeder Listing to see if any of our friends have litters planned, or drop me a line and I can put you in contact with a local, responsible whippet breeder who may have puppies available. If you live elsewhere in the US, please check the AWC Breeder Listing, for information on whippet puppies & breeders in your area. You also may wish to sign up with one of our Whippet Rescue organizations in order to find your new companion. Puppies are almost never available through rescue, but wonderful adult whippets can occasionally be found with rescue. If you are in Northern California you can visit the NCWFA Rescue Team Page and the rest of the country can visit WRAP (Whippet Rescue and Placement).
Be prepared to wait for that whippet puppy, as most breeders only produce a litter when they want something to go on with, and puppies are often all spoken for in advance. It often requires some effort and networking on your part to find your whippet puppy. Remember that puppies are not a commodity and cannot be ordered up online upon demand like an I Pad.
The vast majority of whippet breeders in the US are responsible breeders, striving to breed the best dogs they can, with the best health and temperaments they can. However, there are some very bad apples out there, sometimes with very dazzling web pages full of adorable puppies for sale. The following is my opinion on what to look for in a whippet breeder:
A responsible breeder will have as many questions for you as you have for them, maybe more, will want to meet you in person and visit your home, and will have a contract that will state that the whippet must be returned to them at any time if you can no longer keep it. You should be able to meet the puppies once they are old enough to receive visitors, visit with their dam and relations (don't be too concerned if the sire of the litter is not on the premises; often times in the best families Dad lives elsewhere, and may reside in another country or may have even passed on to the Elysian Fields), and you should be able to see how the puppies live. Both parents should have documented health testing to show that they are free of problems that can be tested for and may have a genetic component. In whippets both parents should have been tested for and be clear of inherited eye defects and clear of serious cardiac conditions, which means that you should be able to see passing OFA eye and cardiac exam results. Conformation and/or performance titles on breeding stock show that the breeder is interested in the testing of their stock and comparison with their peers - good breeders should do something with their dogs and should have an aim higher than just producing cute puppies to sell.
Be ready to become part of a big extended whippet family after you bring your puppy home, as the Whippet World is welcoming to newcomers. We want to stay in touch with our relatives and relations and enjoy introducing newcomers to all the fun things you can do with your whippet.
Tread very carefully if you come in contact with a breeder who is not interested in meeting you and is happy to ship you a puppy, with no strings attached, sight unseen, as long as you can provide the purchase price. Beware of the whippet breeder who always has puppies available - many litters per year is a big red flag in our breed. If you come across a whippet breeder who does not do any health testing on their breeding animals& cannot provide you with test results on said animals, run far, far away.
IMPORTANT UPDATE JUNE 2020
There has been a huge uptick in interest in our breed, perhaps related to the phenomenon of "the Pandemic Puppy", perhaps just because the secret is out about the best dog breed ever. In any case, the NCWFA Breeder Listing has seen an increase of 90% in traffic from pre-pandemic levels & all of our listed breeders are fielding between two and five inquiries a day. Long-planned litters that are on the ground now are spoken for many times over & breeders with Fall and Winter puppy plans have wait lists that are many potential owners deep. Bottom line, if you are interested in a whippet puppy, you will have to wait & maybe wait a long time. The situation is the same all over the US & Canada right now. The wait for adults will even be longer.
